Living lightly at the water’s edge.

A concept for a raised coastal home of cypress and metal, lifted on piers among slash pines at the edge of a salt marsh.

This study explores a family home on a low-lying wooded lot, where flood levels, storms, and summer heat shape the design as much as the view.

The living level is raised on concrete piers so water and wildlife can pass beneath. Deep roof overhangs and a long screened porch keep the sun off the glass and make room for outdoor living most of the year.

A closer look

Working with the site

Raising the house keeps it clear of high water and leaves the ground open. Weathered cypress and a simple metal roof tie the building to the colors of the marsh.

Material detail: Cypress siding, a metal roof, and a screened porch frame the living level.
